Artist Statement 2006

I am fascinated much more by the inner world than by the outer. There are levels of knowledge within me that can be called subconscious, which I have been learning to access through painting. These levels of mind are like dreams, where logic is suspended. They could be impressions left from early childhood, feelings about a person or an event, or ideas about the future. I am only able to see them clearly after I paint them, so painting and recollecting things and feelings forgotten are for me one and the same. This is what my entire body of work is concerned with. Fortunately, other people are usually able to relate quite strongly to these seemingly personal dream-creations. I cannot say why I am drawn to creating art this way, but it gives me a very powerful feeling of satisfaction to complete each painting. I am more concerned with the overall look and feel of a painting than by any specific image within the painting. I insist on capturing the same complexity in my paintings as I experience in the human personality, and what pleases me most is when others can appreciate that complexity.
