It is generally said that one person cannot excel at too many things. One is often advised to stick to one discipline, moreover, to one distinctive style within that discipline. In other words, if you like to write songs, write stories, and paint, choose one of those, for example painting. And as you paint, focus on one type of painting, for example landscapes and nothing more. Or paintings of boats only. Or only abstract. You get the idea.

Personally I am better at painting than at music. This may be in part because I have put in over 20000 hours into painting over the last 20 years. In general, unless you’re Taylor Swift, music does not generate any income these days. Still, I enjoy digging through ideas and combinations of notes to arrive at something that sounds interesting. I like the fact that you can write a song once and then play it forever. Once it exists, it becomes sort of eternal, especially once other people know the song too. Also, I feel that music is a more immediate and accurate expression of how one feels than visual art. This is because you can sing a little line of words and music and exactly describe how you feel at this particular moment. But in order to achieve the same expression through visual means, you might have to spend a day, or a week, or a month, or a year. And by the time your painting is half done, you might not even feel the same way anymore.

I taught myself the piano in 2002, and guitar in 2005. Since then, I’ve been writing songs more or less without a break. I have recorded and released one full length album called “Dimension Dream.” Those songs were written in 2009 in Peru and Mexico. I was 27 at the time, and perhaps it’s all a little naive. I would do it differently today, but I still enjoy hearing this material from time to time.
